New School Room - almost done!

Our new school room is almost done!  We are so excited about this space.  Since the kids are getting bigger and more of them are learning together, we decided to convert our former playroom into a new school room.  We moved the bulk of the toys to a carpeted corner in the basement and they love going down there to play.

Here is our old school area.  It is a corner in our family room.

Bookcases and storage bins

Pictures of the old playroom space:

New built-ins done by hubby.  He did a great job.  We just need a cushion for the window seat.

We moved some alphabet letters that were on the wall and I love them here!  We will be putting a window valance here as well.

Chalkboard that I am working on.  It is a thin piece of plywood that we are going to frame and hang.  This was after one coat.  It is looking better after the second coat and I am planning to do one more.

New bulletin board - to the left is a piece of Homosote building board.  To the right is the Homosote with a red burlap cover.  We bought a big piece of the Homosote and had it cut in 3 smaller pieces.

To be continued.....Hubby is building me some cube shelves and we are hoping to be in our new space by next week!

Respect for Life Month

This October marks the forty-first year that our Catholic Church has observed Respect for Life month.  Beginning October 7th, Respect Life Sunday, we are called to renew our personal commitments to defend all human life.  From conception to natural death.  We honor this commitment through prayer, education, witness, advocacy, and helping those in need.

This year I am feeling called even deeper to the cause of protecting life.  Yesterday I found out that the precious life we were expecting was not to be.  Our sweet baby stopped growing a few weeks ago and now my body is trying to miscarry.

Many thoughts and emotions are cycling through me and it is hard to process how one day you are pregnant and expecting a baby and the next day you aren't.  Life moves quickly and circumstances can change in the blink of an eye.

I feel a sadness and cannot help but feel a guilt.  Did I do something wrong?  Could I have been more careful?  Healthier?  All these feelings are normal and on a rational and intellectual level I realize that it was not my fault.  When I have these thoughts I cannot help but think of the women that actually choose to end the life of their unborn child.  How sad and empty they must feel.  Society tries to convince us that life only matters for those who are chosen and that a first trimester baby is just a "bunch of cells."  I can tell you that an 8 week embryo has a heart and a brain and looks an awful lot like a tiny baby.

I feel such sadness for these Moms who feel so alone and confused or have bought into the idea that their unborn baby is not really a person.  I feel distressed by the pressure on women to take the life of a child so they can have a "better" one.

Studies show that abortion does not help women, it hurts them.  The risks are:  severe bleeding, future pregnancy problems, sterility, needing a hysterectomy, incomplete abortion procedure (damaging baby), severe infection, increased risk of breast cancer, increased risk of suicide, psychological issues, and death.  A non political study in Finland shows that a woman is 4 times more likely to die in the year after an abortion than in the year after childbirth.

Abortion is murder and it is wrong.  I say this not in judgement of those who have made such a profound choice but in defense of those that cannot speak for themselves.  I say this as one who has experienced a pregnancy outside of marriage.  One who has been young and alone and scared.  One who has had to endure the comments and thoughts of others and one who has lacked financial and emotional support.  One who knows that being a single parent is not easy but who recognizes that a baby is a blessing and not a curse.

During this Respect for Life month I pray that eyes are opened, hearts are softened, babies are protected, and mothers are cared for.  May God bless and protect all life upon this earth, from conception until natural death.

Happy Birthday to Miss Comedian

Today our silly, funny, and sometimes shy third daughter turned 5.  It hardly seems possible that 5 years have passed since she made her appearance, 10 days late, into the world.  My Ladybug Girl fan requested a ladybug cake and she was pretty excited with her Rapunzel doll.  Happy Birthday to my big girl.  I can't believe you are officially going into Kindergarten this year!  We love you!!

Happy Birthday to Miss Busy

Today we celebrate the birthday of our sweet fourth daughter, Miss Busy.  She was the sweetest little baby and is just such a blessing to us.  She is always smiling and her smile bring so much joy to us all.  It doesn't take much to bring that smile to her face.  All she wanted was a castle cake and pizza for dinner.  Happy Birthday Sweetie!  We love you!!

Happy Father's Day

Happy Father's Day to my wonderful hubby.  You are a great friend and a wonderful husband and father.  I cannot imagine what my life would be without you and all of our girls in it.  I could go on and on about all the reasons that I love my husband and how great he is, as he complements me so very well.  Happy Father's Day honey.  I am so glad that we are making this journey together.  I'll do my very best to help you get to heaven.

Happy Birthday to Miss Dramatic!

My eldest daughter, the one who made me a Mother turned 14 years old today.  In the blink of an eye, she is old enough to be going to high school.  How did this happen?!  :)

She shared her day with her Dad since it is also Father's Day.  We went to Mass in the morning and came home for a breakfast of French Toast Casserole, per the birthday girls request.  Out for dinner to our favorite local Italian restaurant and then home for cake.

Grandma sent her a kindle so she is very excited about the tremendous library of books that has been opened for her.  Her gift from us is a shared Birthday/Confirmation gift.  She will be going on a retreat weekend with some friends.  She is very excited!

Enthronement

We consecrated our family and enthroned our home to the Sacred Heart of Jesus today.  We had a lovely ceremony with our pastor and some very close friends.  It was a beautiful way to make a statement about Christ being the center of our family.  Here is information about what we did:

Happy Pentecost

Acts 1:4-5 4
And eating together with them, he commanded them, that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but should wait for the promise of the Father, which you have heard (saith he) by my mouth. For John indeed baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost, not many days hence.

Acts 2:1-4 1
And when the days of the Pentecost were accomplished, they were all together in one place: And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a mighty wind coming, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them parted tongues as it were of fire, and it sat upon every one of them: And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they began to speak with divers tongues, according as the Holy Ghost gave them to speak.

Come Holy Spirit!!
Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love.  Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created.  And You shall renew the face of the earth.
O, God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of the faithful, grant that by the same Holy Spirit we may be truly wise and ever enjoy His consolations, Through Christ Our Lord, Amen.

Garbage Duty

I always joke with my husband that anything to do with garbage is a "boy" job.  Since he is the only boy in the house and sometimes travels, the girls have decided to take matters into their own hands.  :)  Thanks Ladies!!

Happy Birthday to Me

Today I celebrated my 38th birthday.  I don't usually do very much for my birthday but this year I am counting all my blessings.  We have a nice home, great family, and wonderful friends.  I have a fantastic husband who does a great job providing all that we need and some of what we want.  I also have 5 beautiful daughters that keep me laughing, smiling, and hopping!

We ordered dinner from a local Italian restaurant that I love and had a lovely meal at home - that I didn't have to cook!  I had Gnocchi with Vodka sauce, salad, bread, and a nice glass of Moscato wine.  I made myself a cherry cheesecake because it is my absolute favorite food in the world, but Hubby surprised me by having a cake delivered by a dear friend who makes DELICIOUS cakes.  Too much cake?  Not a bad problem to have on a birthday!

My family got me a kindle reader.  I wasn't sure if I would like one, because I am a book lover and traditionalist but I am hooked!  I got the one that looks more like an actual page - not the version that is like an ipad.  I could not believe all the books that I can get for free!  I stocked up on GK Chesterton and many other classics that I have been wanting to read.  Now I can not complain that I have nothing to read.  I don't think that my family could have picked a better gift for this book lover!

My Hubby also got me a beautiful silver crucifix necklace and a medal of the Immaculate Conception (miraculous medal) because I have been wanting one.  Thanks honey!!

My oldest daughter and her best friend decorated the house for the festivities and my younger 4 provided entertainment with a play, dancing, and singing after cake.

I not only survived turning 38, but I enjoyed it.  Thank you Jesus for all that I have.

Mother's Day

Happy Mother's Day!  Our day started with Mass, the my Hubby made me my favorite omelet for breakfast!  Omelet with spinach, tomato, and feta cheese.  Mmmmmmm!   We had a leisurely morning and early afternoon and then we headed over to our neighbor's house for some manual labor and a cook out.  Our yard is very hilly and shady so our neighbor offered us a small plot next to her garden so we could garden this year too!  She is so wonderful.  We are thinking about getting a few chickens and will try to reciprocate with some delicious eggs.

So we all went down and dug out our plot and planted some veggies.  I am not the best gardener but I really like the idea and I really want to be good at it.  That counts for something, right?  :)  Turns out that Miss Dramatic is excellent at digging and planting!  She was a huge help in getting our garden started.

We planted lettuce, spinach, zucchini, red peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes (3 kinds) and squash.  I am doing container strawberries and herbs on our front steps.  We used to get all of our veggies from a local CSA but they are no longer farming and this is much cheaper and closer to home.  What a great summer project for the kids too!
